Color Lab – (Learning the basics of Painting)

Description

Explore colors – complimentary, cool, warm and experiment with different  mediums such as Acrylics, Inks and Watercolor.  There’s no right or wrong way to paint in this class, as we will be focusing on developing your own creative vision introducing you to basic tips and techniques that will help you create your own original artwork.

Supplies:

  • For Acrylics:  Canvases, acrylic paints in Cadmiun Yellow, Primary Yellow, Cadmiun Red, Alizarim Crimson, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium white (Golden brand preferred), plus Filtbert Brushes in assorted sizes.
  • For Inks & Watercolors: Liquid Panels no bigger than 16 x 20, watercolor paper/sketchbook, watercolor brushes in assorted sizes.
  • Images of things you would like to paint or sketches of your own idea sketches.

Creating Experimental Watercolors

Description

This class can be for all levels of experience. We will cover basics of watercolor. Elements of design of composition, lighting, shading, perspective, and color theory will be covered, in order to compose your art works.  This is a fun, yet challenging medium to work in.  We will spend some time on drawing in preparation for better  watercolor projects, and outside drawing will be encouraged. If you have good photos you want to use as reference, those can be used also.  Techniques, that are characteristic to the watercolor medium will be explored, to add interest to your creations. Projects at first will be more structured and, later lead toward using more creativity and choice, but at all times experimentation is encouraged. Also, your level of experience, and the class’s preferences, will influence the direction we travel.

Supply list:

Creating Experimental Watercolors:
One of these triads:   Windsor Blue, Windsor Red, Windsor Yellow or
                                            Cobalt Blue, Permanent Rose, Transparent Yellow- Windsor Newton
                                            Pthalo Blue/green shade, Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow- Daniel Smith
You can get other secondary and other colors, or wait until 1st day to see my samples. Other brands I like are QOR, Holbien, Grumbacher, Koi, and Turner.  Small .5 ml or larger tubes.
plastic divided palette . You need extra room for mixing, in center or larger areas. Covered palettes are nice to have.
140 lb. cold press cellulose or cotton watercolor paper, aprox, 11x 14″ pad. suggested brand Strathmore or Arches
Assortment of round and filbert brushes, 2 to 4, and wait to see my wash brushes and sizes
large ( 1 to 2 quart) clear jar
rubber cement or masking fluid
Half roll (aprox.) toilet paper
cellulose sponge
drawing pad or paper and clip board
Pencil, sharpener, eraser, pocket folder for samples

Encaustics & Mixed Media (2nd Session)

An Introduction to the world of Encaustic Painting.

Encaustic is a wax based paint (composed of beeswax, resin and pigment), which is kept molten on a heated palette. It is applied to an absorbent surface and then reheated in order to fuse the paint.

In this workshop you will be introduced to this wonderful and unique art medium that dates back centuries, and get acquainted with  some of the many techniques utilized to create artwork on different substrates.  We will produce work that will range from abstract to representational, painting in molten wax.

No previous experience required just the desire and willingness to have fun and let your imagination take the lead.

Most supplies will be provided and are covered by a lab fee.  We will discuss any extra materials needed the first day of class.

 Lab Fee: $30
